What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS therapy) is now available at Revive Therapeutic Services in Providence, Rhode Island. We are excited to offer this profoundly effective treatment to the community and our patients. The procedure is a Safe, Drug-Free option for those that qualify to receive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation treatment.

Neurostar TMS is an advanced therapy which uses a targeted, pulsed magnetic field, similar to what is used in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine. The pulses, produced through a NeuroStar FDA approved device, are delivered directly to the specific area of the brain involved in depression.

TMS stimulates areas of the brain that are underactive in individuals with depressive symptoms during 19-minute treatment sessions. Unlike medications that are  dispersed throughout the entire body, this is a targeted treatment for depression without the common side effects caused by medications.

The Neurostar TMS machine is considered one of the industry’s best. It is non-invasive and easy to use.

What are Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation sessions like?

You will be seated comfortably in a chair. A technician will map out your symptoms in order to identify what areas of the brain will need treatment. TMS sessions take around 20-30 minutes to complete. They are done Monday through Friday and patients will undergo 36 sessions to complete a treatment.

There is a number of conditions and illnesses that can be treated using transcranial magnetic stimulation. This treatment is primarily used for children, teenagers, & young adults that suffer from mental illnesses, including:

  • Depression
  • PTSD
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder

Benefits of TMS Therapy

  1. Effective and long-term results
TMS has shown up to 70% effectiveness in treating mental health conditions, with 90% of patients still reporting positive effects 12 months after treatment has ended. As a bonus, it has shown promising results in individuals who did not initially respond favorably to antidepressant drugs.
  2. TMS is non-invasive
TMS is an external therapy that poses no risk. There’s no need for electrode implants or invasive procedures. The waves utilized are noninvasive, safe, and comfortable; they are similar to those of an MRI scan.
  3. Fewer possible adverse effects- Antidepressants are a broad category of drugs that some people find difficult to cope with the adverse effects. TMS therapy may be preferable to medicine if you haven’t been happy with the adverse effects of other treatments. Some patients do not feel anything at all during TMS therapy; even if they do, the results typically wear off quickly.
